Barska X-Trail 15x70 Binoculars

Barska X-Trail 15×70 Binoculars

Binocular Design

The X-Trail 15×70 binocular (Model AB10154) is of the porro prism type with a central-focus mechanism. It is designed with big objective lenses.

The big lenses combined with Barska’s proprietary coating regime, enable optimum light transmission giving you clear views and images.

Let us look at the other attributes of this binocular in the following sections.

Lens System

The objective lenses of this X-Trail model measures 70mm and the prism is made of BAK-4 glass. The optics are all fully-coated.

In this configuration, the Field of View is 231 feet @ 1000 yards (or 77 meters @ 1000 meters) which is considered wide for this size binoculars.

The Close Focus feature of the 15×70 is 49.2 feet (15 meters) which means the minimum distance that you can focus is a bit farther away from you.

Focusing is achieved pretty easily with this model using the central focus adjustment knob. If you need to further adjust your focus, there’s a diopter adjustment located on the right eye.

The provided eye relief for this binocular, via the fold-down eyecups, is pretty decent at 20mm, so if you’re wearing eye glasses there should be no problem – you should be good to use this piece from Barska.

Magnification

The magnification of this binocular is fixed at 15x. With a 70-mm objective lens, the resulting exit pupil @ 15x would be 4.7mm.

With a configuration of 15×70, the resulting Twilight Factor would be 32.4 while the Brightness Index would be 21.78.

Body

It weighs 44.8 ounces (2.8 pounds or 1.27 kg) so expect it would have a good weight when you use it. Considering its got big lenses, however, the weight of this binocular is still on the conservative side.

The protective non-slip rubber armoring that houses the binocular and protects the optics has indented finger holds for better ergonomics and easier handling.

The black matte finish makes an attractive and quality look for this model.

As this binocular is not waterproof nor fogproof, take precautions in using it on extreme weather conditions or activities that might make the unit wet.

The accessories included with the Barska X-Trail 15×70 binoculars are the following:

  • Table Top Tripod – enables a steady view on your images

  • Very easy to focus
  • Impressively cheap price
  • Awesome warranty from Barska
  • Applicable for daytime (like hunting or nature viewing) and night-time hobbies

Disadvantages:

  • It is not waterproof, nor fogproof
  • Might be heavy for some users
  • Size (dimension) is on the “Big” side

User Reviews and Feedback

Pros:

  • “Easy to hold”
  • “A great buy, the price is more than right for a well manufactured tool”
  • “…this has incredible optics and clarity…”
  • “A very versatile model; can be used at home or in the wild…”
  • “This binocular offers a lot for a very cheap price…”
  • “…Excellent clarity at long distance…”
  • “The clarity and definition of this binocular is comparable to that of an HDTV…”
  • “…the coating is very nice…”
  • Stars, planets and other heavenly bodies light years away (like the M15 global cluster) can be seen through these binoculars as detailed by some users

Cons:

  • Some people had manufacturing issues just out from the case; some had found the rubber flaps around eyepieces almost torn off, others said they had a cracked left eyepiece
  • Hard to hold steady, images jump around a lot – need to have a better and sturdy tripod to focus
  • The tripod provided is too small and too short
  • The tripod adapter is not that sturdy (some users suggest filling in epoxy on the opening cavity to get rid of the problem)
  • Some users had collimation issues when they first received the binoculars. If you’re having problems with collimation, check out this link on how to do it
  • Some users don’t like that the lens cover is a single unit
  • The neck strap supplied with the binocular is not that comfortable for some users
  • The carrying case has no room for the tripod adapter nor the tripod
  • There are some users that say the focus will drift off a little when you put pressure on the eye cups

Summary & Conclusion

Going through all the specifications and considering the reviews from users, the Barska X-Trail 15×70 binoculars strong points are the low price and the good quality of the optics.

As far as applications are concerned, this model can be used for hunting, nature viewing, bird watching, hiking and other day time activities. Many users though use it for star gazing and viewing other celestial objects.

However, this is not a replacement product for a telescope, but instead it is a great complement for it as it is very handy and more portable. It also gives a much better field of view of the sky compare to a telescope so you’ll see a lot more view.

If you’re going to use this for a long period of time, it is highly recommended that you use a very good tripod as the view would be shaky considering the high magnification power.

Barska X-Trail 8×42 Binocular

The Barska X-Trail 8×42 binocular is one of the popular model in Barska’s huge selection of all-purpose binoculars.

Just like the other binoculars in the all-purpose range, the Barska X-Trail 8×42 is designed and made for the great outdoors.

Generally, the X-trail series have large objective lenses with multi-coated optics. This means that light gathering and transmission is pretty high so you’ll be seeing bright and clear images even in low light situations.

In this Barska X-Trail 8×42 review, we will point out the specific features and other technical specifications so you could appropriately evaluate if this model would suit your applications in mind.

Product Description and Review

Barska X-Trail 8x42 BinocularsBinocular Design

The X-Trail 8×42 is of the reverse porro prism design which makes it more compact compare to a regular porro prism.

This design is sometimes referred to as the ‘M’ design as the binoculars tend to form an M-shape configuration resulting in a more compact setup and lighter weight.

Lens System

This X-Trail unit has 42mm objective lenses. The prism glass is made of BK-7. The glass and lenses have Ruby multi-coating to keep an optimum light transmission efficiency.

The field of view (FOV) of this binocular is 378 feet @ 1000 yards (or 126 meters @ 1000 meters) which makes for a wide enough view for your images or scenery.

The Close Focus capability of the 8×42 is 33 feet (10 meters) which means it can’t be used on those extra-near or microscopic views you want.

This model has a central focus system so you could adjust your views pretty easily. The diopter adjustment is located on the right eye to help you adjust your focus accordingly.

If you wear eye glasses, you won’t have problems with this model as the featured eye relief is 20 mm, which is sufficient enough for most eyeglass wearers. The eye relief can be adjusted using the fold down eye cups.

Magnification

This binocular comes with a fixed magnification of 8x, there is no zoom feature available. With a 42-mm objective lens, the resulting exit pupil @ 8x would be 5.25mm.

With the 8×42 configuration, the resulting Twilight Factor would be 18.33 while the Brightness Index would be 27.56.

Body

The housing and frame material of this binocular is made of a high-grade aluminum which makes for a light yet rugged construction.

The body is covered with a rubber armor that protects the housing and is finished with a black matte color for an awesome look.

The physical size of the X-Trail 8×42 is 6.5” x 5.5” x 3” (or 165mm x 140mm x 76mm) so it is not big enough to be classified as “big” but not small enough to be classified as compact. It takes a bit of a space so won’t fit in your pocket.

The product weighs 26.46 ounces (1.65 pounds or 750 grams) so it is not that heavy but if you’ll be using it for long periods, it might affect you somehow. If this is the case, you can always mount it on a tripod as this is a tripod-adaptable model.

Take note that this binocular is not waterproof nor fogproof, so you can’t use it on extreme weather conditions. If you’re activities involve water or cold environment, this binocular is not the right type for you.

Included Accessories

The Barska X-Trail 8×42 binoculars include the following accessories:

  • Carrying Case – helps keep the binoculars in storage while you’re not using them
  • Neck Strap – a handy strap to keep the binocular ready when you need to view something
  • Lens Covers – helps protect the lenses to avoid scratches and dust
  • Lens Cloth – something that you could use to wipe and clean your binoculars

Warranty

This binocular is protected by Barska’s Limited LifeTime Warranty.

Advantages:

  • Easy to focus
  • Extremely cheaper price compare to other brands
  • Great warranty scheme from the manufacturer
  • Applicable to most outdoor hobbies

Disadvantages:

  • Not Waterproof
  • Not Fogproof
  • Not applicable in cold or freezing temperatures

The Point n View series is designed so that you can have the convenience of having an integrated digital camera with your binocular. If you like what you’re seeing, you can take photos or record videos of the views or images with the digital camera.

Take note though that the camera has its own optics and it is not using the lens of the binoculars so the resolution (or quality) of the images are different compare with the binoculars.

There are two models available in this series, the 8×22 and the 8×32. The Point n View 8×32 is the more popular model of the two.

Barska Zoom (Terrestrial or Celestial) Binoculars

The next type of binoculars in Barska’s range are the Zoom binoculars (also called Terrestrial, Celestial or Astronomical types). These binoculars are designed to provide users powerful magnification to get more details of long-distance views and images. For the other features and specifications, we will talk about and review each one of them in the following sections.

Product Description and Review

Binocular Design

The Conquest HD 8×32 is designed with birding and nature enthusiasts in mind. Spectacular optics with great ergonomics are design basis for this binocular model.

Durability is also another attribute for the HD 8×32 as with all Conquest HD models so expect a tough and rugged unit with this series.

Allowable Operating Temperature

The design temperature range allowed for the 8×32 HD to properly operate and function is from -20°C up to +63 °C.

This range is pretty wide which would suit most outdoor environment. Take note not to use this outside of these temperature range!Save

Save

Lens System

Built with a Schmidt-Pechan prism combined with Zeiss’ proprietary multilayer coating and LotuTec coating systems, the HD 8×32 gives a new definition on the word “clear”. As users are all saying, the brightness, sharpness and clarity of this binocular is unbelievable.

The Field of View (FOV) of the HD 8×32 is 140 meters at 1000 meters (Apparent Field of View would be 64 °) which is really wide and one of the many things that birders actually love about this model.

The front lens diameter of this binocular is 32 mm and with a magnification of 8x, the Exit Pupil Diameter would be 4 mm. The 8x magnification provides a good overview and shake-free images.

The twilight factor of this binocular is only 16 which is the lowest of all the Conquest HD models which somehow gives you an indication that it is indeed not applicable for Astronomy.

Similar to the other Conquest HD models, the diopter adjustment scale of the 8×32 is +4 | -4 dpt and it also has an index point as a reference marker. The diopter adjustment mechanism is situated on the right eyepiece. The adjusting knob located in the center in combination of the diopter adjustment makes focusing of the eyepieces as easy as 1-2-3 – such a breeze!

If you like looking at objects in close distance, this model is also great for that as its Close Distance Focus capability is only 1.5 meters. This is great for looking at bugs, butterflies and other insects.

The Inter-pupillary Distance (IPD) of the 8×32 is between 54 – 74 mm which generally suit most persons. If you require a smaller or larger IPD’s, then you should consider a different model.

Body

Proven in the field by various simulated typical hunting accidents, the rubber-armored body of the Conquest HD binoculars remarkably withstood these tests proving its toughness and ruggedness. You can read all about the durability tests done in our previous article here.

Not only that it is tough, the rubber armor provides a nice and comfortable feeling on your hands as well.

When it comes to water, this binocular is water-resistant up to 400 mbar (4 meters or 13.3 feet water depth). This is way better than most binoculars which were designed for up to three (3) meters only.

Fogging and corrosion protection for this unit is accomplished by standard Zeiss’ nitrogen purging procedures.

Physical Dimension

Users also love the compactness and light weight characteristics of the 8×32. With its actual size of 132 mm x 118 mm (Height x Width) which is just about 5.2 x 4.65 inches and a weight of only 630 grams (or 1.39 pounds), the convenience that this model gives you is pleasingly fantastic!

Other Features

  • Twist-out eyecups that can be set in four positions (i.e. top, bottom and in two other intermediate positions). For those wearing glasses, adjustments should be on the lowest position which gives a total eye relief of 16 mm.
  • Eyepiece cap
  • Protective lens cap
  • Strap for fastening protective lens cap
  • Carrying strap
  • Carrying case including carrying strap
  • Lens cleaning cloth
  • Instructions manual
  • Warranty card
  • Quality certificate
  • ¼” Tripod adapter

What Is The Warranty For The Conquest 8×32 HD?

Zeiss has a very good product warranty in place. For the first five years, this binocular is covered by Zeiss’ No Fault 5 Year Warranty policy. It then transitions into the limited lifetime warranty after that.

Other Things To Consider

  • This product is made in Germany so if there is something on your binocular that needs to be repaired, it might take a while before you get it back as the unit needs to go to Germany for repairs.
  • If in case you need to mount this binocular to a tripod, you need to have the tripod adapter called Binofix. Click Here to check it out.

Summary & Conclusion

The lightweight and compact Zeiss Conquest HD 8×32 binocular is great for bird watchers and nature lovers as attested by users.

It is also good for hunting and stalking game during the day. The combination of its size and weight makes it a very convenient companion on your various outdoor activities.

The near focus capability of only 1.5 meters also allows you to experience crisp & clear views, colors and images up close.

With great design, amazing optics combined with ergonomic features, it is not surprising that the 8×32 Conquest HD binocular model from Zeiss has a high product rating of 4.7 from actual verified users.

With all the great feedback from users, there is one notable negative remark regarding the lens covers which can be easily remedied by replacing them with suitable parts made by other brand.

In summary, we highly recommend the 8×32 based on outstanding design, high-quality optics and a very high product rating from customers. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

The front lens diameter of this binocular is 42 mm and with a magnification of 10x, the Exit Pupil Diameter would be 4.2 mm. The twilight factor of this binocular is pretty decent at 20.5 so it also performs well in situations when the lighting is not that great.

Where Is The Zeiss Conquest HD 10×42 Made?

As with all the models in the Conquest HD series, the 10×42 version is designed and manufactured in Germany.

Can The Conquest HD 10×42 Be Mounted On A Tripod?

In case you’re wondering, this model does not have image stabilization so if you’ll be using it for a really long time and require a steady view, you would need a tripod.

When mounting this binocular to a tripod, you have to have the Binofix Tripod Adapter as this unit cannot be mounted directly. For more details, have a look at it on this page.

How Does The Zeiss Conquest HD 10×42 Compare With Vortex Razor, The Terra ED Or The Swarovski SLC WB?

vs. Terra ED

The overall build quality of the Conquest HD series compare to the Terra’s is more advanced. The diopter setting, focus, twist-out eyecups are more solid as well.

More importantly, the Conquest glass is better which is where the great difference lies. These better features will result in less eye strain and give you a more enjoyable experience overall.

vs. Swarovski 10×42 SLC WB

Swarovski and Zeiss would of course have their differences, as both have their strong points and subtleties in their product ranges.

However, glass wise, the clarity of the Zeiss Conquest 10×42 is comparable to the 10×42 SLC WB from Swarovski. You won’t even see the difference. The clarity of the lenses are equivalent.

There is of course one big difference between the two – the price. The Swarovski model is more or less, a thousand dollars higher in price than the Zeiss’.

If you’re a Swarovski fan and you can afford it, by all means go for it but if you’re into quality and performance at a better price, then the Zeiss is a very good option.

vs. Vortex Razor 10×42

Based on people who have tried both the Razor and the Conquest models, it was concluded that the optical quality of the Zeiss model is more superior compare to the Vortex.

Also, the focus knob of the Conquest HD 10×42 is more sensitive than the Vortex Razor 10×42 which makes focusing and adjusting a lot easier, even with one hand.

Lastly, if you’re comparing the Conquest HD series to other brands, it is reassuring to know that there was a test conducted by Cornell Ornithology Lab and they have concluded that the Zeiss Conquest is the best in their price range.

They have indicated that these are very good binoculars. The clarity and depth of field are outstanding. Suffice to say that you’re in for a good treat with this binocular from Zeiss.

What Is The Warranty For This Model?

This binocular is covered by Zeiss’ No Fault 5 Year Warranty policy. After that, it transitions into the limited lifetime warranty which is really a pretty good deal.

Great product with an awesome warranty, you don’t really have much to lose in here!

Negative Feedback:

Reading through various feedbacks from users, the following negative comments were noted:

  • Lens covers are cumbersome and won’t stay on especially while using the binoculars with a chest harness
  • The strap that came with the binoculars is not that comfy for some users
  • There are few users claiming that there are physical damages (out of the box) when their binoculars arrived such as scopes are out of alignment, cracked rotating eyecup and scratched lens (which are all covered by warranty anyway, so shouldn’t be a huge deal)
  • While most of the users find the focus knob easy to use, some people find it as so sensitive to operate
  • Eye cups could not be raised high enough
  • Some users say that after-sales support is not that great (although there are many more other users saying otherwise)

Some Notes From Users

We’ve gathered some salient points from users’ comments. These are not negative feedbacks but pretty handy to know firsthand before deciding to buy this model.

  • Some users prefer the Cabela’s Pro Binocular Harness Item: IK-711764 than the one supplied with the binocular as it is more comfortable to use.
  • Some users would like a longer eye-relief capability. Take note that the eye-relief of this binocular is 18mm (which would fit most people who wear eyeglasses) so if you need more than that, you have to go for another model or brand.
  • Other users find the fairly limited selection of accessories from Zeiss (i.e. eye cup covers) as opposed to other brands a bit of an issue. (Although this was easily fixed with a solid covered harness purchased from other suppliers).
  • Some people found out that installing a slide-on flip up cover for the outer lens protects the binocular from scratches better than the ones that came with the package

Summary & Conclusion

Well, we’ve provided you lots of information here regarding the Zeiss Conquest HD 10×42 binocular. We’ve talked about the different features and specifications that this model has to offer and we’ve also laid out the positive and negative aspects that actual users discovered with this particular product.

With great glass, amazing quality, awesome features and outstanding warranty, most of the people who had purchased the 10×42 Conquest HD are very happy about this binocular from Zeiss.

The toughness and the sturdiness of the Conquest HD binoculars is unquestionable as proven by the rigorous and extreme tests we have mentioned in this article. So expect that his binocular is really rugged and can be used for most of your outdoor needs.

With regards to the negative feedback, some users found issues with the lens cover falling off but this has been easily addressed by using a replacement from a different supplier.

Also, there were a number of people who have had disappointing experiences, not in the binoculars themselves but on how they have received their binoculars with damage to it. Surely, this has not been the case after it was manufactured so obviously an issue here during transit or courier of the product.

Are The Conquest HD Series Binoculars Durable?

Another great thing about the Conquest HD models is their durability. And this is not only because the manufacturer says it so but because these binoculars have undergone all sorts of actual durability testing in the field and the results are truly amazing.

Check out below the various extreme durability tests were talking about:

  1. For the first test, the Conquest HD is placed on the roof of an ATV which they then accelerated until the binoculars fell off. The binoculars landed on the forest floor and rolled over. When checked, the only thing recognizable is some dirt and a very few slight scratches. The functionality is unaffected at all.
  1. In the second test, they put the binoculars on a wet, solid ground and have it run-over by a two-and-a-half ton off-road vehicle. The binoculars went under the tires twice and yet it was neither warped nor have a broken housing. The adjusting rings still worked properly and the lenses remain crystal clear after cleaning.
  1. In the third trial, they dropped the binoculars from a height of 3.5 meters hitting several rods until finally landing on a leafy-ground. After the test, the binoculars are still totally functioning.
  1. The fourth test done was dragging the binoculars tied to a tow bar of an all-terrain-vehicle for over a mile with a speed of sixty (60) kms/hr. The damage on the binoculars is quite bad and the sling swivel was lost. The inner systems though still remain properly functional.
  1. The fifth durability test was they fed the binoculars to a dog. They rubbed it with salami and gave it to the dog to be chewed for 13 minutes. Visible marks from the fangs can be seen on the binoculars but none of the bites went through the rubber housing. After a short time, the marks disappeared and everything on the binoculars still works fine.
  1. The next test done was they placed the binoculars under ice-cold water for up to three minutes. After the test, there is no sign of water penetration and the view from the HD glasses is impeccable!
  1. For the last test, the binoculars are placed on a stub and was fired at with a caliber 2.7mm lead shot from twenty-five (meters). The bullet became stuck in the rubber armor and so the binoculars have no inner damages.

These extreme trials proved that the Zeiss Conquest HD series binoculars are extremely robust and made of high-quality materials that can withstand actual situations and conditions in the field.

Product Description and Review

Binocular Design

Designed for general (universal) applications, the Minox BV 8×25 is a compact binocular which makes it ideal for numerous outdoor activities that requires a handy and lightweight baggage.

Minox has put emphasis on a great quality binocular with incredible focus and accuracy that is small and light enough to easily carry as you go and this binocular is the result of that design.

We’ll discuss in more details the other features and specs this binocular has to offer in the next sections.

Allowable Operating Temperature

Temperature plays a critical role in every equipment so it’s best to know what temperature range the BV 10×42 can be used to. Similar to the other Minox models we’ve come across, this binocular is good for 14 °F to 122 °F (or -10 °C up to 50 °C).

Proper care of your binocular starts with you so take note of this operating temperature range so you won’t end up damaging your binocular.

Lens System

The BV 8×25 provides you viewing enjoyment because of its fully-multicoated lenses resulting to bright images with excellent contrast giving you detailed rendition of things you’re looking at.

This is because maximum light transmission and minimum interfering reflections are achieved by multi-coating all glass/air surfaces by Minox proprietary coating procedures.

The Field of View (FOV) of the BV 8×25 is pretty wide at 358 feet at 1,000 yards (or 6.8°, or 119 meters at 1,000 meters) giving you more area of the views and scenery.

The front lens diameter of this binocular is 0.98 inch (25 mm). As the magnification is 8x, the Exit Pupil Diameter would be 0.12 inch (3.1 mm).

The Close Distance Focus capability of this binocular is 4.92 feet (or 1.5 meters) so you can use it to have a close-up view of objects a little bit more than a meter away.

This binocular has a central joint mechanism that enables fast individual adjustment of the distance between objective lenses.

Magnification

The BV 8×25 has a non-variable magnification power of 8x which actually complement the design of this compact binocular giving you clarity and accuracy. The 8x power also do not bounce around too much when your hand shakes.

Body

The body of the BV 8×25 is made of an extremely sturdy aluminum metal. It has a non-slip rubber armoring which gives you that great and comfortable hold at all times.

The body is also waterproof and can withstand a pressure of up to 0.3 bar which is equivalent to a depth of three (3) meters.

The inside of this binocular is protected against corrosion and fogging through the use of Nitrogen, even with severe and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Physical Dimension

With its actual size of only 4.29 x 3.85 x 1.53 inches (109 x 98 x 39 mm) combined with its weight of just 9.14 ounces (or 259 grams), this makes the BV 8×25 the most compact and lightest of all the five (5) Minox binoculars we have talked about.

This is actually the best characteristic that this binocular has and one of its most recognized advantage over the other models.

Other Features

The BV 8×25 also features twisting eyecups providing eyeglass wearers their needed eye relief which goes up to 0.61 inch (or 15.5 mm).

The eyecups also have a 3-position rotation setting which makes it pretty easy to have the same extension between eyepieces unlike the other pull-out types which get misaligned easily.
