Product Description and Review

Binocular Design

The Conquest HD 8×32 is designed with birding and nature enthusiasts in mind. Spectacular optics with great ergonomics are design basis for this binocular model.

Durability is also another attribute for the HD 8×32 as with all Conquest HD models so expect a tough and rugged unit with this series.

Allowable Operating Temperature

The design temperature range allowed for the 8×32 HD to properly operate and function is from -20°C up to +63 °C.

This range is pretty wide which would suit most outdoor environment. Take note not to use this outside of these temperature range!Save

Lens System

Built with a Schmidt-Pechan prism combined with Zeiss’ proprietary multilayer coating and LotuTec coating systems, the HD 8×32 gives a new definition on the word “clear”. As users are all saying, the brightness, sharpness and clarity of this binocular is unbelievable.

The Field of View (FOV) of the HD 8×32 is 140 meters at 1000 meters (Apparent Field of View would be 64 °) which is really wide and one of the many things that birders actually love about this model.

The front lens diameter of this binocular is 32 mm and with a magnification of 8x, the Exit Pupil Diameter would be 4 mm. The 8x magnification provides a good overview and shake-free images.

The twilight factor of this binocular is only 16 which is the lowest of all the Conquest HD models which somehow gives you an indication that it is indeed not applicable for Astronomy.

Similar to the other Conquest HD models, the diopter adjustment scale of the 8×32 is +4 | -4 dpt and it also has an index point as a reference marker. The diopter adjustment mechanism is situated on the right eyepiece. The adjusting knob located in the center in combination of the diopter adjustment makes focusing of the eyepieces as easy as 1-2-3 – such a breeze!

If you like looking at objects in close distance, this model is also great for that as its Close Distance Focus capability is only 1.5 meters. This is great for looking at bugs, butterflies and other insects.

The Inter-pupillary Distance (IPD) of the 8×32 is between 54 – 74 mm which generally suit most persons. If you require a smaller or larger IPD’s, then you should consider a different model.

Body

Proven in the field by various simulated typical hunting accidents, the rubber-armored body of the Conquest HD binoculars remarkably withstood these tests proving its toughness and ruggedness. You can read all about the durability tests done in our previous article here.

Not only that it is tough, the rubber armor provides a nice and comfortable feeling on your hands as well.

When it comes to water, this binocular is water-resistant up to 400 mbar (4 meters or 13.3 feet water depth). This is way better than most binoculars which were designed for up to three (3) meters only.

Fogging and corrosion protection for this unit is accomplished by standard Zeiss’ nitrogen purging procedures.

Physical Dimension

Users also love the compactness and light weight characteristics of the 8×32. With its actual size of 132 mm x 118 mm (Height x Width) which is just about 5.2 x 4.65 inches and a weight of only 630 grams (or 1.39 pounds), the convenience that this model gives you is pleasingly fantastic!

  • Twist-out eyecups that can be set in four positions (i.e. top, bottom and in two other intermediate positions). For those wearing glasses, adjustments should be on the lowest position which gives a total eye relief of 16 mm.

Where Is The Zeiss Conquest HD 10×42 Made?

As with all the models in the Conquest HD series, the 10×42 version is designed and manufactured in Germany.

Can The Conquest HD 10×42 Be Mounted On A Tripod?

In case you’re wondering, this model does not have image stabilization so if you’ll be using it for a really long time and require a steady view, you would need a tripod.

When mounting this binocular to a tripod, you have to have the Binofix Tripod Adapter as this unit cannot be mounted directly. For more details, have a look at it on this page.

How Does The Zeiss Conquest HD 10×42 Compare With Vortex Razor, The Terra ED Or The Swarovski SLC WB?

vs. Terra ED

The overall build quality of the Conquest HD series compare to the Terra’s is more advanced. The diopter setting, focus, twist-out eyecups are more solid as well.

More importantly, the Conquest glass is better which is where the great difference lies. These better features will result in less eye strain and give you a more enjoyable experience overall.

vs. Swarovski 10×42 SLC WB

Swarovski and Zeiss would of course have their differences, as both have their strong points and subtleties in their product ranges.

However, glass wise, the clarity of the Zeiss Conquest 10×42 is comparable to the 10×42 SLC WB from Swarovski. You won’t even see the difference. The clarity of the lenses are equivalent.

There is of course one big difference between the two – the price. The Swarovski model is more or less, a thousand dollars higher in price than the Zeiss’.

If you’re a Swarovski fan and you can afford it, by all means go for it but if you’re into quality and performance at a better price, then the Zeiss is a very good option.

vs. Vortex Razor 10×42

Based on people who have tried both the Razor and the Conquest models, it was concluded that the optical quality of the Zeiss model is more superior compare to the Vortex.

Also, the focus knob of the Conquest HD 10×42 is more sensitive than the Vortex Razor 10×42 which makes focusing and adjusting a lot easier, even with one hand.

Lastly, if you’re comparing the Conquest HD series to other brands, it is reassuring to know that there was a test conducted by Cornell Ornithology Lab and they have concluded that the Zeiss Conquest is the best in their price range.

They have indicated that these are very good binoculars. The clarity and depth of field are outstanding. Suffice to say that you’re in for a good treat with this binocular from Zeiss.

What Is The Warranty For This Model?

This binocular is covered by Zeiss’ No Fault 5 Year Warranty policy. After that, it transitions into the limited lifetime warranty which is really a pretty good deal.

Great product with an awesome warranty, you don’t really have much to lose in here!

Negative Feedback:

Reading through various feedbacks from users, the following negative comments were noted:

  • Lens covers are cumbersome and won’t stay on especially while using the binoculars with a chest harness
  • The strap that came with the binoculars is not that comfy for some users
  • There are few users claiming that there are physical damages (out of the box) when their binoculars arrived such as scopes are out of alignment, cracked rotating eyecup and scratched lens (which are all covered by warranty anyway, so shouldn’t be a huge deal)
  • While most of the users find the focus knob easy to use, some people find it as so sensitive to operate
  • Eye cups could not be raised high enough
  • Some users say that after-sales support is not that great (although there are many more other users saying otherwise)

Some Notes From Users

We’ve gathered some salient points from users’ comments. These are not negative feedbacks but pretty handy to know firsthand before deciding to buy this model.

  • Some users prefer the Cabela’s Pro Binocular Harness Item: IK-711764 than the one supplied with the binocular as it is more comfortable to use.
  • Some users would like a longer eye-relief capability. Take note that the eye-relief of this binocular is 18mm (which would fit most people who wear eyeglasses) so if you need more than that, you have to go for another model or brand.
  • Other users find the fairly limited selection of accessories from Zeiss (i.e. eye cup covers) as opposed to other brands a bit of an issue. (Although this was easily fixed with a solid covered harness purchased from other suppliers).
  • Some people found out that installing a slide-on flip up cover for the outer lens protects the binocular from scratches better than the ones that came with the package

Check out below the various extreme durability tests were talking about:

  1. For the first test, the Conquest HD is placed on the roof of an ATV which they then accelerated until the binoculars fell off. The binoculars landed on the forest floor and rolled over. When checked, the only thing recognizable is some dirt and a very few slight scratches. The functionality is unaffected at all.
  1. In the second test, they put the binoculars on a wet, solid ground and have it run-over by a two-and-a-half ton off-road vehicle. The binoculars went under the tires twice and yet it was neither warped nor have a broken housing. The adjusting rings still worked properly and the lenses remain crystal clear after cleaning.
  1. In the third trial, they dropped the binoculars from a height of 3.5 meters hitting several rods until finally landing on a leafy-ground. After the test, the binoculars are still totally functioning.
  1. The fourth test done was dragging the binoculars tied to a tow bar of an all-terrain-vehicle for over a mile with a speed of sixty (60) kms/hr. The damage on the binoculars is quite bad and the sling swivel was lost. The inner systems though still remain properly functional.
  1. The fifth durability test was they fed the binoculars to a dog. They rubbed it with salami and gave it to the dog to be chewed for 13 minutes. Visible marks from the fangs can be seen on the binoculars but none of the bites went through the rubber housing. After a short time, the marks disappeared and everything on the binoculars still works fine.
  1. The next test done was they placed the binoculars under ice-cold water for up to three minutes. After the test, there is no sign of water penetration and the view from the HD glasses is impeccable!
  1. For the last test, the binoculars are placed on a stub and was fired at with a caliber 2.7mm lead shot from twenty-five (meters). The bullet became stuck in the rubber armor and so the binoculars have no inner damages.

These extreme trials proved that the Zeiss Conquest HD series binoculars are extremely robust and made of high-quality materials that can withstand actual situations and conditions in the field.

Minox BV 8×25 Binocular Equipment Review

The last one, but not the least of course, in our series of Top 5 Minox Binoculars is the BV 8×25 model.

We have talked about the other four (4) models in previous articles and what a way to end this series by talking about the most compact model of all the five. Let’s get this on with shall we!

Product Description and Review

Binocular Design

Designed for general (universal) applications, the Minox BV 8×25 is a compact binocular which makes it ideal for numerous outdoor activities that requires a handy and lightweight baggage.

Minox has put emphasis on a great quality binocular with incredible focus and accuracy that is small and light enough to easily carry as you go and this binocular is the result of that design.

We’ll discuss in more details the other features and specs this binocular has to offer in the next sections.

Allowable Operating Temperature

Temperature plays a critical role in every equipment so it’s best to know what temperature range the BV 10×42 can be used to. Similar to the other Minox models we’ve come across, this binocular is good for 14 °F to 122 °F (or -10 °C up to 50 °C).

Proper care of your binocular starts with you so take note of this operating temperature range so you won’t end up damaging your binocular.

Lens System

The BV 8×25 provides you viewing enjoyment because of its fully-multicoated lenses resulting to bright images with excellent contrast giving you detailed rendition of things you’re looking at.

This is because maximum light transmission and minimum interfering reflections are achieved by multi-coating all glass/air surfaces by Minox proprietary coating procedures.

The Field of View (FOV) of the BV 8×25 is pretty wide at 358 feet at 1,000 yards (or 6.8°, or 119 meters at 1,000 meters) giving you more area of the views and scenery.

The front lens diameter of this binocular is 0.98 inch (25 mm). As the magnification is 8x, the Exit Pupil Diameter would be 0.12 inch (3.1 mm).

The Close Distance Focus capability of this binocular is 4.92 feet (or 1.5 meters) so you can use it to have a close-up view of objects a little bit more than a meter away.

This binocular has a central joint mechanism that enables fast individual adjustment of the distance between objective lenses.

Magnification

The BV 8×25 has a non-variable magnification power of 8x which actually complement the design of this compact binocular giving you clarity and accuracy. The 8x power also do not bounce around too much when your hand shakes.

Body

The body of the BV 8×25 is made of an extremely sturdy aluminum metal. It has a non-slip rubber armoring which gives you that great and comfortable hold at all times.

The body is also waterproof and can withstand a pressure of up to 0.3 bar which is equivalent to a depth of three (3) meters.

The inside of this binocular is protected against corrosion and fogging through the use of Nitrogen, even with severe and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Physical Dimension

With its actual size of only 4.29 x 3.85 x 1.53 inches (109 x 98 x 39 mm) combined with its weight of just 9.14 ounces (or 259 grams), this makes the BV 8×25 the most compact and lightest of all the five (5) Minox binoculars we have talked about.

This is actually the best characteristic that this binocular has and one of its most recognized advantage over the other models.

Other Features

The BV 8×25 also features twisting eyecups providing eyeglass wearers their needed eye relief which goes up to 0.61 inch (or 15.5 mm).

The eyecups also have a 3-position rotation setting which makes it pretty easy to have the same extension between eyepieces unlike the other pull-out types which get misaligned easily.

The package also includes a neoprene strap, eyepiece cap and ever-ready case.

Minox BL 8×33 Binocular Equipment Review

In our research, the Minox BL 8×33 binocular is the most popular among the Minox models.

In this article we shall discuss details of this binocular and provide you a comprehensive review of this product and its features.

We will even include what actual users say about it so you can see how different people feel about the BL 8×33.

Product Description and Review

Binocular Design

The BL 8×33 is one of Minox’s Comfort Bridge styling design. It falls on the mid-size range and yet it is packed with full-size features.

The Comfort Bridge styling is an open center bridge design which provides responsive handling –meaning – you can actually operate this binocular easily with just one hand!

Allowable Operating Temperature

This binocular is designed so that it can operate on a temperature of 14 °F to 122 °F (or -10 °C to 50 °C).

It can basically be used on a freezing day but not beyond minus 10 degrees centigrade and can pretty much withstand the hottest day during summer time.

Lens System

It has fully multi-coated lens system that delivers very high light transmission and minimizes stray light, giving you superb image resolution and contrast resulting to beautiful life like images.

It has a very wide field of view of 420 feet per 1000 yards (or 140 meters @ 1000 meters (8.0 °)) so you won’t miss out on those amazing views and images, even those birds flying fast in the sky!

The front lens diameter is 1.3 inches (33 mm) and with a magnification power of 8x, this results to an Exit Pupil Diameter of 0.16 inch (4.1 mm).

The Close Distance focus capability of this binocular is 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) so you can actually look at some interesting objects more than a couple of meters away from you.

Magnification

The BL 8×33 comes with a fix magnification of 8x which also means that you don’t have the capability to vary the power.

The 8x means your view is magnified eight (8) times compare to when you view an object using just the human eye. For most general outdoor purposes, the 8x magnification is more than enough for you to enjoy views and sceneries.

Body

The body is made up of “space-age polycarbonate” material which is fully encased in a shock dampening non-slip rubber armoring. This makes the BL 8×33 rugged, ergonomic yet looks really professional.

The binocular is nitrogen purged to eliminate internal fogging and the entire optical assembly is sealed for waterproof performance down to a depth of 16 ½ feet (5 meters).

Physical Dimension

The physical size of the BL 8×33 is 5.43 x 5.11 x 1.77 inches (138 x 130 x 45 mm) – that is, Height x Width x Depth – and it only weighs 22.9 ounces (650 grams). So you would realize that this binocular is really compact and light. It will fit snugly on your small outdoor bag.

Other Features

Another great feature of the BL 8×33 is the adjustable twist-up eye cups. The twist-up capability makes for an overall eye relief of 0.69 inch (17.5 mm). This is a pretty generous eye relief and is available for everyone – for those who wear glasses this is a welcome feature.

Take note as well that all BL HD models are shipped as standard with a neoprene strap and robust carrying field-case so you don’t need to buy these items as separate accessories.

Other Technical Specifications:

Diopter Adjustment: +/- 4 dpt.

Twilight Number: 16.2
